A fantastic autumn day with a brisk easterly wind
bringing with it little spells of mist and murk, the kind of day you pray for;
a varying number of nets were open at Holland throughout the day (opening and
closing depending on the weather) and we managed an excellent total of 322 new
birds ringed, highlighted by the islands 7th BLUE TIT, caught mid-morning and a
brilliant total of 7 Ring Ouzels in
amongst hundreds of Redwings and Blackbirds and smaller numbers of Robins,
Bramblings and Goldcrests.
Other
totals through the day from the rest of the island (although with the big
ringing effort some of the census routes were not intensively covered) included
9 Woodcock, 6 Woodpigeons, 4 Grey Wagtails, 51 Robins, 9 Wheatears, 19+ Ring Ouzels, 800+ Blackbirds, 130 Fieldfares, 220 Song
Thrushes, 3,000+ Redwings, the first two Mistle
Thrushes of the autumn, 19 Blackcap, 11 Chiffchaffs, 35 Goldcrests, 6
Chaffinches, 130 Bramblings, a Greenfinch, 2 Siskins, 4 Common Redpoll, 8
Redpoll sp. 2 Lapland Buntings and 4 Snow Buntings while the Green-winged Teal and Red-breasted Flycatcher were
still present.
